LUTAR CONTRA A FOME

Dear Friend,

We did it! ... And we have over 2,000 pictures to prove it. Last Sunday, more than 200,000 of us Walked the World in 268 cities--about 90 countries--to deliver a clear message to the world from all 24 time zones: End child hunger!

Stand with 200,000 others who Walked the World to end child hunger: Contribute now to feed a child for a year.

To catch a glimpse of all the feet, activists, children, families, (and dogs, camels, and elephants) who walked with us, visit our growing online scrapbook of stories and photos--from Hong Kong to Montreal, Moscow to Lagos:

In total, five times as many walkers as last year joined us in taking real steps towards ending child hunger. We captured the attention of local and international media around the globe and raised enough funds to feed more than 50,000 school children for a year.

Reports are still coming in, so here are just a few of the early highlights:

  • Jakarta, Indonesia - "More than 2,500 walkers came out in Jakarta to walk through the famous Raguan Zoo, first being greeted by a traditional Indonesian Wave Dance. Elephants stepped in line for the first 50m as well!"

  • Honduras - "More than 11,000 people walked in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. President Maduro and his wife, first lady Aguas Ocana, joined the walkers. In response to the G8 debt relief plan that was finalized the same weekend, the President declared that he would direct part of the funds made available to school feeding programmes in Honduras."

  • Malawi - 11 walks in the most important towns in Malawi brought out over 43,000 walkers (photo above), many of whom were beneficiaries from the country's school feeding programme. Key participants included the Vice President and Miss Malawi. A brass band set the tune for the event.

  • Colombo, Sri Lanka - "Our walk was flagged off by Sir Arthur C. Clarke who surprised everyone by joining the walk in his wheelchair for a few hundred meters. 70 school feeding beneficiaries joined the walk..."

  • Wellington, New Zealand - "On the first leg we took a route down the waterfront but decided we weren't making enough noise or being visible enough. We therefore came home down one of the central streets in Wellington, with one of our more vocal walkers carrying a megaphone and talking about world hunger!"

  • Monrovia, Liberia - "We walked 5 miles to the stadium under a heavy downpour of rain. This did not deter us in any way, because were singing and we were also determined to show the world our concerns for the future of the children."

  • Tanzania - "60 children from Bahari Primary school in Tanzania donated their lunch money to Walk the World - and sang Tanzanian songs for all the walkers."

  • Rome, Italy - 6,000 participants traced the steps of ancient Romans through the Fori Imperiali and around the Colosseum in Rome.

Despite this amazing success, our work has only just begun. Whether or not you were able to participate in Walk the World on Sunday, you can help the World Food Programme and its partners feed more of the world's children right now:

It costs just $34 USD to provide a child with a nutritious meal at school for a year. Please contribute to the World Food Programme:
